(4 players, Level 4-5 (Medium Advanced to Advanced)
Minbalism is a collaborative composition by the percussion quartet ensemble et al., recorded for the group’s third album, The Slow Reveal. The piece is built on three core ideas: a shimmering harmonic sound mass, shifting rhythmic meter, and a gradual arc of tension and release.
The work centers on two bell-like timbres, vibraphone and Fender Rhodes electric piano, played in unison and in perfect fourths to create a hypnotic, trance-like sound cloud. As the piece unfolds, simple elongated melodies emerge in the glockenspiel and almglocken, joined by vocal harmonies and a growing 4:3 rhythmic complexity in the drumset. Around the five-minute mark, the composition opens into a long-awaited release, as the vibraphone sustains the harmonic texture and the full ensemble locks into a distinctive groove.
The title Minbalism references both the aesthetic influence of minimalism and Minbal Studio in Chicago where the work and The Slow Reveal were recorded and produced (now Jamdek Recording Co.).
ensemble et al. includes Charles Kessenich, Ron Tucker, Ross Marshall, and Jeff Eng.
